Social Networking Sites: Curse or Boon

When we talk about Social Networking, the first thing that strikes in our mind is Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn but social media is much more diverse than this.

One of the most commonly asked questions today is “are you on Facebook?” or “did you check out the latest pics on my profile?” It is amazing how social networks have completely changed people’s habits, becoming a must-visit Web destination for all. In fact, if you find a friend not using any of the popular social networking services, it seems strange. Social Networking Thoughts like “is he/she living in today’s world” and “how can he/she afford to miss such a great thing when the entire world is buzzing around it” start coming to your mind the moment you realize your friend’s absence on the site.

Yes, we are living in the age of the Social Networking . According to Wikipedia, “Social Media includes web and mobile-based technologies which are used to turn communication into interactive dialogue among organizations, communities, and individuals.” News now travels faster than ever before. Breaking news appears first in the Social Media than in traditional mediums like TV and newspapers.   What is this social media?????

It is a platform where youth can form groups and discuss upon various topics like music, education, politics, films and many more. It is also an opportunity for young entrepreneurs to market their business ideas and promote them by creating a page on these sites. Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, trade ideas, share content and pictures, and many other activities. Users can stay abreast of the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business prospects. Students can collaborate with their peers to improve their academic proficiency and communication skills. You can learn about different cultures and societies by connecting with people in other countries.

The increasing popularity of these social networks has gained attention as the most viable communication choice for the bloggers, article writers and content creators. Social Networking Almost all the news providers are now present in the Online Social Media platforms, providing us news even before they air or print it. The Social Media has also played a great role in organizing revolutions in a few nations.

Thus, advent of the Social Media has been a boon for many.

But every medal has its own reverse. So, there are some cons of using the social networking sites too i.e boon also carries with it a bane. Social Networking has been spreading some falsified and fabricated news and information also. This has led to many conflicts and untoward incidents. It has led to spread of hatred and mistrust among people.

If you are not careful, what you post on the Net can come back to haunt you. Revealing personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Also, unscrupulous people can target you for cyber bullying and harassment on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall prey to online attacks which can create tension and distress.Kids can be greatly affected by these social networking sites if they are allowed to use them. One of the negative effect of social media or network is it leads to addiction. Social Networking Spending countless hours on the social sites can divert the focus and attention from a particular task.

The experts are suggesting that using of social networking is not wrong but the way it is being used is important. Students and youngsters must be given guidance on what should be the dos and do not’s. Also, the students must be educated on the overall developmental activities instead of getting glued to the mobile phones and computers and spending precious time chatting. Students from their end must take initiative to find out how best such sites can be used. So folks, wake up and use technology as a boon and not a bane.
